Tummy Troubles

We've all been there, feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and waiting for something to happen. Constipation is one of the most common complaints, affecting people of all ages. It can occur due to multiple reasons including dehydration, low fiber intake, certain medications, changes in routine, surgery, or chronic health conditions. While it may not be the most comfortable topic to discuss, it's an important one, and thankfully, there are plenty of ways to get things moving again.

Before reaching for a laxative, it's worth looking at a few simple lifestyle changes. Drinking plenty of water, increasing fiber through fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and staying physically active can all help promote regular bowel movements. However, when constipation persists despite these changes, over-the-counter medications can provide safe and effective relief.

There are several types of laxatives, and choosing the right one depends on the cause and severity of constipation. Fiber supplements, including psyllium (MetaMucil) can help establish regularity but work best when taken with plenty of water. Stool softeners like docusate (Colace) help draw water into the stool, making it easier to pass and are often recommended for those who want to avoid straining. Osmotic laxatives, such as polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX), work by pulling water into the intestines and are one of the most commonly recommended options for occasional constipation. Stimulant laxatives like senna (Senokot) and bisacodyl (Dulcolax) encourage the muscles of the intestines to move stool along more quickly, making them useful for short-term fast relief but not ideal for regular daily use without guidance.

Although these products are available without a prescription, they aren't one-size-fits-all. Persistent constipation, severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool, or unexplained weight loss should always be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

If you're unsure which bowel regimen is right for you or a loved one, the team at Axtell Pharmacy is here to help. We can review your medications, recommend the most appropriate treatment, and help you develop a plan to keep your digestive system healthy and comfortable.
