Opiates

In today’s world, an opioid epidemic exists. This crisis has emerged as one of the most critical public health concerns, affecting millions of lives. This epidemic is characterized by the misuse and addition to opioid substances which has led to devastating consequences on individuals. Opioids are a class of drugs that include prescription pain relievers such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine. Although these medications are effective in managing pain, they also carry a high risk of addition and dependence.

A contributing factor to today’s opioid epidemic is by overprescribing of opioids by healthcare providers. In the late 1990s, there was an increase in the number of opioid prescriptions due to pharmaceutical companies reassuring the medical community that opioids were not addictive. Due to this false acclamation, many patients became dependent on opioids, leading to today’s widespread misuse and addiction.

As it is continues to devastate lives, it is crucial to take proactive steps to those at risk. Naloxone, also known as Narcan, is a critical tool available to reverse an opioid emergency, and it is available at our pharmacy. Please reach out to us at Axtell Pharmacy should you have any questions.
