Compounding is an alternative route of dispensing prescription medications to patients and can vary in a variety of factors. Cost, the specific need of the patient or clinic, and the route of administration are all reasons why compounds should be considered when traditional medications may not be ideal.
The first step in the compounding process would be for the patient to speak to their physician to make sure a compound is right for them. In many situations, such as hormone in-balances and erectile dysfunction, compounded products may offer a distinct advantage over traditional medications. Specific dosages of compounds can be created to address the exact need of the patient. If the patient's physician believes a compound is the best course of treatment, a prescription stating that the product should be compounded, should be given to patient.
The next step is to have our pharmacy start compounding the specific medication the physician or veterinarian has ordered. Upon receipt of the prescription or called in order, we will start actual compounding of the medication. In most cases, our compounds are created only once a specific order has been placed...we do this to be able to deliver only the best products to our patients and customers.
Once we start a compounding order, we follow specific formulas developed by fellow physicians, veterinarians, and pharmacists and provided to us by our compounding vendor, PCCA. We also have the opportunity to create specific formulas to address specific needs a physician or veterinarian may have.
Once the formula has been selected, our pharmacists check for possible interactions that the medication may cause. Just as in traditional over-the-counter and behind-the-counter medications, compounded products may interact with other medications a patient may be taking.
Next we go thru the process of creating the compound. Following the directions of the formulas we use, we weigh out specific amounts of the appropriate chemicals. The chemicals are then mixed together and prepared for dispensing according to the formula. For creams and ointments, we use a variety of tools such as mortars and pestles to blend all chemicals into a smooth product. For injectable products we utilize a 797 recognized sterile clean room, to prepare compounded item.
Once the compounded medication is complete, our pharmacists will discuss with the patient, about usage, storage, and any precautions that may be required while taking the compounded medication.
Axtell Pharmacy and Compounding Center completely guarantees all products we prepare for our patients. Our goal is for our patients and customers to leave with 100% satisfaction.
